Lesson 1:
Flower
- A colored, sometimes scented, part of a plant that contains its reproductive organs.
- It consists of a leafy shoot with modified leaves, petals, and sepals surrounding male or female organs, stamens and pistils.
Functions of Flower
- Flowers make our surroundings beautiful and colorful.
- They contain organs that enable a plant to reproduce its own kind.
The Parts of a Flower
Attractive Parts of the Flower
Petals
- · One of the showy colored parts of a flower in bloom.
- Corolla –formed when petals are taken together.
Sepals
- · Green leaf-like structures which protect the flower when it is still a bud.
- Calyx – formed when sepals are taken together.
Receptacle or Base
- · Tip of the stem which supports the flower.
Reproductive Parts of the Flower
Pistil
- · The reproductive part of a flower which is called the female part of the flower.
- · It is made up of stigma, style and ovary.
Parts of the Pistil
- Stigma – located at the top of the pistil.
- Style – the stalk of a pistil.
- Ovary – base of the pistil
- Ovule – female cells or eggs that can be found inside the ovary.
Stamen
- · The reproductive part of a flower which is called the male part of the flower.
- · It is composed of the filament, anther and pollen grains.
Parts of the Stamen

Filament - is al long slender stalk which attaches the stamen to
the flower.
- It also holds the anther.

Anther – it holds the pollen grains.
3.
Pollen Grains - are yellow, powdery particles that contain the
male reproductive cells.
Kinds of Flower
Complete or Perfect Flower
- · Flowers which have all the parts like the gumamela.
- · The stamen and pistil are found in this kind of flower.
- Another example of a perfect flower is the morning glory. The stamen and pistil are found inside the lower part of the morning glory flower.
- · Flowers that are lack of either pistil or the stamen.
An example of the imperfect flower is the corn plant.
- · Notice that corn plants have flowers on top and on the side.
- · The flower at the top of a corn contains the stamen, which is arranged in rows on a stalk. The flowers down the stamen contain the pistil which is arranged in rows on a cob.
